Staatsbesuch

Auf den Fotos sind öffentliche Termine der Bundesregierung, meist Staatsbesuche, zu sehen. Ich habe sie mit einer Fachkamera aus übersichtlicher Entfernung über die jeweilige Dauer der Veranstaltung belichtet. Hier manifestiert sich politische Macht. Sie äussert sich als kaum durchdringbares System. Pressefotografie richtet sich auf die handelnden Personen, fixiert und verdichtet den Moment. Die Langzeitbelichtung als konzeptuelles Gestaltungsmittel dagegen gestattet eine andere Form von Beobachtung. Der zurückgezogene (Kamera-)Standpunkt erlaubt eine Gesamtschau der Inszenierung. Das politische System wird dadurch nicht transparenter, aber die Oberfläche eines Apparates tritt zu Tage, nicht die einer oder weniger Personen.

The pictures show official events held by the German government, mostly state visits. I took them with a large format camera from a clear distance with an exposure time as long as the duration of the event. Here political power becomes manifest. It shows as a hermetic system. Press photography focuses on persons and aims to catch the moment. In contrary a long time exposure used as a conceptual artistic means permits a different kind of observation. The more remote camera angle shows the ritual as a whole. As a result the system does not become more transparent, but the surface of a political apparatus appears – regardless of the individuals participating.
